Academic Testing Center (ATC) Information for Students

When special test accommodations are needed, it is up to each instructor and student to determine if the accommodation can be handled within the classroom environment. This will allow the students to address problems and/or questions directly with someone who has knowledge of course content and departmental procedure.

When the standard classroom environment will not adequately meet the needs of the accommodation for the student, the Academic Testing Center (ATC) is available to serve the students and faculty.

Student Check List and FAQ

To schedule the exam:

  • Print one ATC Test Scheduling Form for each exam you intend to take in the ATC.
  • Read the form, fill in the student section, and sign the form.
  • Contact each instructor to set up an appointment to discuss scheduling your test in the ATC. This should be done well in advance of the exam to allow the instructor to have time to review the information and then send it to the ATC.
  • Give the signed Test Scheduling Form to the instructor.
  • If you have an approved testing accommodation, please give two (2) copies of your Disability Accommodation Notice (DAN) to each instructor - one is for your instructor to keep and the other is for the ATC. You or your instructor may bring or send the request form (and DAN, if applicable) to the ATC, and the ATC will email you and your instructor confirmation of your exam day and time.
  • Monitor your email for exam confirmation. If you do not receive an email from the ATC at least two days before the exam, contact the ATC to confirm we have received your exam.
  • It is your responsibility to notify your instructor and the ATC if you need to reschedule the exam (e.g. in case of illness). You may call us at (804) 289-8639 or reach us via email at testingcenter@richmond.edu.
  • A new Test Scheduling Form must be completed for each exam.

The day of the exam:

  • Bring a photo ID. You will not be allowed to take an exam without showing your ID.
  • Bring the materials needed for the exam.
  • No personal items (including, but not limited to, cell phones, electronic devices, smart watches, back packs, bags, food or drinks etc.) will be allowed in the testing room; lockers will be provided for students. The ATC is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled exam time so that you have time to check in and put all of your personal items in a locker before the exam begins.
  • Except for students with food-specific testing accommodations, students may only bring a clear bottle of water with the label removed.
  • All students are expected to abide by the University of Richmond Honor Code.
I have a testing accommodation. Do I have to use the Academic Testing Center?

No. Students with accommodations are not required to take exams in the ATC. If a student is already approved for testing accommodations and wishes to make other arrangements to take an exam within the department, students should discuss the exam with their instructors well in advance of exam dates to allow for sufficient preparation.

When is the earliest I can sign up for an exam?

You can sign up for exams as soon as you're made aware of the exam date. All exams should be scheduled three (3) business days in advance. However, we strongly encourage that you sign up for all of your exams for the current semester at the beginning of the term to ensure we have space to accommodate you. If you will be using the ATC, a separate Test Scheduling Form is required for each exam.

How do I know if the ATC has received my request form and/or exam materials?

The ATC will email the instructor and student confirmation of the Test Scheduling Form and exam time.

I have an exam tomorrow that I forgot to sign up for. Is it too late to schedule with the ATC?

If we have not received the Test Scheduling Form or exam materials within the required time frames, most likely you will need to make alternate test arrangements with your instructor. The ATC cannot guarantee that there will be space or staff available, or that we will receive the exam materials in time if the form and exam materials are sent with less than three days’ notice.

I have scheduled an exam with the Testing Center. When does my time start?

Students are expected to take all exams at the scheduled times, so please arrive on time. If you arrive after your scheduled start time, those missed minutes might not be able to be added on to the end of your exam. If you are more than 10 minutes late for an exam at the ATC, we reserve the right to decline administering the exam and will refer you back to your instructor.

You may arrive early to give yourself time to store your personal belongings in the lockers provided by the ATC. The ATC is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

My instructor announced in class that we would be allowed to use our notes on the test. Will I be allowed to use these in the Testing Center?

Yes, as long as the instructor specified that on the Test Scheduling Form.

My DAN and/or Test Scheduling Form do not include items I will need during the exam. What do I do?

For accommodations, please contact your disability advisor to resolve this matter. Only testing accommodations specified on the DAN will be allowed in the ATC, so it’s important to resolve any questions well in advance of the exam and be sure that the ATC has received that documentation.

For non-accommodation testing materials, please contact your instructor to resolve the matter. Only materials specified on the Test Scheduling Form will be allowed.

I would like to use my personal computer for my exam. Is that allowed?

Students are only allowed to use electronics approved in their DAN, or as permitted by their instructor on the test scheduling form. No electronics are permitted in the ATC without proper approval--they must be stored in the lockers in the ATC during testing. The ATC is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Campus was closed due to bad weather, and my exam was rescheduled. What do I need to do?

As soon as you're made aware of the new test date, contact us to reschedule so that we can ensure that we have space to accommodate you.

I need to change or cancel my exam in the ATC. What do I do?

It is your responsibility to promptly notify the ATC and the instructor about any requested changes.

I have more questions. Who can I contact?

Please contact the ATC at (804) 289-8639 or at testingcenter@richmond.edu.
