Diplomas

When Students Receive Their Diplomas

  • Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Leadership Studies graduates will receive their diplomas at the commencement ceremony. August and December graduates who have walked previously will receive their diploma via mail upon conferral.
  • May Law School graduates will receive their diplomas after degrees are conferred. January Law School graduates who have walked previously will receive their diplomas via mail upon conferral. Those who have not walked will receive their diploma after the May ceremony.
  • School of Professional and Continuing Studies graduates will receive their diplomas at the commencement ceremony. August and December graduates who have walked previously will receive their diploma via mail upon conferral.

Size of Diploma for Framing

  • Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Leadership Studies diplomas measure 11" x 14" (Prior to December 2023 diplomas were 11.5" x 14.5") 
  • Graduate Business diplomas measure 11" x 14" (Prior to December 2023 diplomas were 11.5" x 14.5") 
  • Law School diplomas measure 17" x 22"
  • School of Professional and Continuing Studies diplomas measure 11" x 14" (Prior to December 2023 diplomas were 11.5" x 14.5") and certificates measure 8.5" x 11"

Information Listed on Diplomas

In addition to the standard diploma wording, diplomas contain the following information specific to the student:

  • The banner at the top of the diploma reads "University of Richmond" for all students, regardless of home school.
  • School and Degree Awarded (i.e. Bachelor of Arts). The student's major is NOT indicated on the diploma, only the degree is.
  • College (Richmond or Westhampton) and School (Arts and Sciences, Business, and Jepson students only) are noted in the text of the diploma and the dean's signature line.
  • Name as listed on the student's degree application with suffixes as indicated.
  • Latin honors awarded (i.e. cum laude).
  • In the School of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Leadership Studies, departmental honors awarded (i.e. departmental honors in chemistry). This does not include honor societies such as Beta Gamma Sigma.

Students Completing Two Majors

Students in the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, or Leadership Studies receive the degree associated with their primary major. For example, a student whose primary major is a BS in Biology with a secondary major of English will receive one diploma, a Bachelor of Science, regardless of the degree associated with the secondary major. Dual degree students who complete 44 units, including all major and degree requirements, will receive two diplomas.
